Give your child a gift that will keep on giving for the rest of their lives -- a visit to their school and an observation of your child in class. All Black parents should be at their children's school on Friday, May 7th, 2010, National Parent's Day.
Here are the steps to participate:
1) Please notify your child's school before Friday, May 7th to let them know that you will be sitting in your child's class on that day and making an appointment to conference with your children's teachers about their academic progress.
2) Observe your child’s classes. Parents should not interfere in the learning process, distract children in the class or challenge teachers in front of their children. Parents should schedule an appropriate time to discuss their observations with the teacher or the principal.
3) Schedule a future meeting with your child’s teacher(s) to discuss your child’s school work, progress, and what you can do at home to supplement what they are doing during the school day.
4) Complete an Individual Academic Plan for Black Students (IAPBS), which will help Black parents create and control their children's educational future. You can download a template below.
5) Consider joining the Black Star Community PTA or League of Black Parents to organize and advocate for your child's education and successful future. Click here for more information.
Pre-schools, nursery schools, kindergartens, elementary schools, high schools and colleges, can participate on National Parent's Day.
