We are now accepting applications for our new initiative called the Black Star Men of Honor Society.
The Black Star Project has created the Black Men of Honor Society to mentor, support, and challenge high-performing 10th through 12th-grade Black male students to succeed in college and throughout their lives.
Young black men who are accepted as Honor Society members must maintain a 3.0 grade-point average, complete a community service project, apply to at least 4 colleges and universities during 11th grade, mentor and tutor younger students, and meet monthly with their advisory board comprised of Black Men of Honor Society alumni and a designated mentor. Any student in Chicago who is in 10th, 11th or 12th grade with a GPA of at least 3.0 is eligible to apply.
The application process is designed akin to the college application process. Students must submit a completed application with an original essay, a letter of recommendation from a teacher and a parental permission form. Applicants may receive help with the application process from peers, teachers, parents, and Black Star Project Mentors.
Black Men of Honor Society participants will benefit from networking support and prestige that will enhance their college and career viability. Honorees will be encouraged to strive for academic excellence and to show leadership through community service and progressively responsible roles within the Honor Society.
