Why is this program important?
Students in low-income, mostly Black and Latino neighborhoods are achieving academically at incredibly low levels. In 2013, only 11% of Black, 8th-grade students in Chicago scored at or above a proficient level in reading and only 10% of Black, 8th-grade students scored at or above a proficient level in math, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (nicknamed "The Nation's Report Card"). This means that 89% of these students are NOT reading proficiently and 90% of them are NOT calculating and problem-solving proficiently in math!
Our students need help, but tutoring can be incredibly expensive. The program goal is to not only improve the life of the Black and Latino communities, but closing the racial academic achievement gap. Kimberly Lightford Saturday University presents an opportunity for parents and communities to take control of their children's education by ensuring they receive the extra support needed to excel.
