The Black Star Project's Fall 2024 Programs: Empowering Youth for Success
This fall, The Black Star Project is excited to offer a lineup of educational and development programs designed to inspire and uplift our youth. We are offering four impactful programs: Kimberly Lightford Saturday University, Phillip Jackson Freedom School, Young Black Men of Honor, and Phillip Jackson Youth Development Program. These programs provide students with essential skills, knowledge, and mentorship for academic and personal growth. The cost is FREE!
Kimberly Lightford Saturday University (KLSU)
KLSU returns this fall to engage 4th-8th graders in subjects like math, reading, STEM, and leadership. Starting Saturday, October 5th, the program runs from 10 AM to 1 PM at the Maywood Park District, offering a free, enriching experience for students to bridge educational gaps.
Phillip Jackson Freedom School (PJFS)
The Phillip Jackson Freedom School, located in Bronzeville, offers a holistic educational experience designed to foster critical thinking, leadership, and civic engagement among 1st through 5th grade students. This program provides an opportunity for students to explore African-American history and culture, along with real-world problem-solving activities that connect classroom learning to community building. The program is rooted in a tradition of social justice and empowerment, encouraging students to take pride in their heritage while preparing for future academic and life success.
Young Black Men of Honor (YBMOH)
The Young Black Men of Honor (YBMOH) program is designed to guide young Black men, ages 10-18, through personal and academic development. Meeting in Bronzeville, this program focuses on character-building, leadership skills, and creating pathways to success for young men in our community. YBMOH provides mentorship, workshops, and team-building exercises, all while encouraging participants to become positive role models for their peers and younger generations.
Phillip Jackson Youth Development Program (PJYDP)
The Phillip Jackson Youth Development Program (PJYDP) is a quarterly after-school mentoring program for middle and high school students. PJYDP connects participants with dedicated mentors—usually current university students or alumni—who work with each cohort member to set substantive goals and develop a plan for success. These goals are informed by weekly presentations from community elders, business executives, and other leaders of color. Each presentation connects to a weekly theme rooted in social justice, cultural understanding, academic enrichment, workforce development, and/or college and trade school preparedness. The program is free for all participants and parents are highly encouraged to attend all meetings and excursions. Meals will also be provided weekly.
